Seeing Through the Marble Shell

Do you ever watch other people and believe their life is more adventurous, special, unusual, miraculous, or rewarding than yours?

I have. It’s way too easy to compare ourselves to others.

There is always someone who has:

  • A bigger house
  • A bigger bank account
  • More children
  • Nicer cars
  • Better job
  • More organization
  • More talent
  • Better looks

If you can think of something that is special to you, there is someone who has “more.”

The comparison game is one we always lose. Every time.

The truth is no one is exactly like you. No one.

You are unique.

You are special.

You are extraordinary.

You make a difference in this world.

You are beautiful.

Without you, we would miss out on your uniqueness. Without you, our world would be lacking.

You are necessary.

Psalm 139 tells us:

Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out;
you formed me in my mother’s womb.
I thank you, High God—you’re breathtaking!
Body and soul, I am marvelously made!
I worship in adoration—what a creation!
You know me inside and out,
you know every bone in my body;
You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit,
how I was sculpted from nothing into something.
Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth;
all the stages of my life were spread out before you,
The days of my life all prepared
before I’d even lived one day. The Message [emphasis mine]

To believe that there is nothing special about you is to say you have no purpose. You are saying that your Creator made a mistake.

He says you are wonderful!

He says you are breathtaking!

He says He sculpted you!

A sculptor creates from a lump of clay or a piece of marble. They look at the medium in their hands and can see the finished product. They’ve already created their masterpiece in their heads; now they need to transfer their vision to the product.

“The best artist has that thought alone
Which is contained within the marble shell;
The sculptor’s hand can only break the spell
To free the figures slumbering in the stone.”  ― Michelangelo

This is how the Creator sees you. His masterpiece.

The only way to win the comparison game is to believe the Creator’s words. There’s no comparison. We win. Every time.

“My invitation to you is to begin living every moment as though you are miraculous and deserve to live an extraordinary life. Fake it if you must and keep faking it until it’s real to you. The gift you will be giving yourself is a lifelong journey of discovery, one that is infinite and infinitely rewarding. Begin the journey. Today. This moment. Now.” ― Robert White
