Sheila (*not her real name) sat, anxiety creeping to a new high. Every day she prayed and watched for any slip-up on Todd’s part. Had he quit visiting those online sites? Maybe she should recheck the software tracking app. She did, but it didn’t lower her anxiety level. It felt like she went from one anxious moment to another.
If she didn’t check, all she thought about all day long was checking the app. When she did check, she lost hours following each item on the report to see exactly what he was doing. How did that help? She felt like a police officer or parole agent. And she hated it. But she didn’t know how to trust Todd.
Sheila is like so many women I talk to. When you’ve been betrayed, especially by the man who vowed to love you, your sense of safety and stability is shattered. What once felt secure now feels like a house built on sand.
And in your pain, confusion, and fear, you do what many of us do—you try to gain control.
When Control Masquerades as Safety
Control feels like the logical response to chaos. It gives the illusion of stability. You track his phone. Read into his tone. Analyze his movements. Monitor everything.
But here’s the truth: control doesn’t heal you. It only makes you more anxious, more exhausted, and more unsure.
It turns your focus outward when real healing starts inward.
The desire to control is rooted in fear. And fear will always keep you stuck.
The Bible reminds us in 2 Timothy 1:7 that “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.” God’s way isn’t about grasping for control—it’s about trusting him enough to surrender.
And surrender doesn’t mean weakness. It means strength rooted in truth.
The Person in the Mirror
Sheila told me later that she realized she’d spent so much energy trying to manage Todd, trying to fix him, that she hadn’t allowed God to heal her heart.
With the support of biblical coaching, she began to see that she was emotionally and spiritually depleted because she was fighting a battle that wasn’t hers to fight.
Together with her coach, Sheila took the brave step to stop trying to fix him—and instead, started letting God heal her.
Healing began when Sheila, guided by coaching, looked in the mirror and asked: “What if I focused on what I can control—me?”
She acknowledged her fears, her pain, and her disappointment. She stopped pretending to be okay and opened the door for God to do the deep work in her soul, supported by the wisdom and encouragement of her coach.
It wasn’t easy. But it was holy ground.
How Biblical Coaching Helped
My coaches didn’t fix my husband. They didn’t hand me magic words to control him or guarantee he’d change.
Instead, they held up a mirror—helping me see what was truly mine to carry and what wasn’t. I started to recognize the lies I’d believed about myself and my role in the relationship. Through Scripture and prayer, I began to untangle my identity from his choices and see myself through God’s eyes. Coaching revealed patterns I couldn’t see on my own.
They gave me a map—practical steps to rebuild my identity, my voice, my purpose, and my confidence. We walked through tools rooted in biblical truth that helped me calm the anxiety, communicate more clearly, and set healthy boundaries without guilt. These steps helped me rebuild not only my sense of safety but my sense of self.
And they became mentors—reminding me that God hadn’t abandoned me and that, even in this heartbreak, I still had a future and a hope. They pointed me back to God’s Word when I felt lost and hopeless. Their wisdom, rooted in grace and truth, helped me take one brave step at a time. I learned how to apply Scripture to my specific wounds.
Deuteronomy 31:6 says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
You can stop trying to carry everything. You can release what isn’t yours. And you can trust God to carry what is his.
