Audrey (not her real name) felt stuck. How could she find freedom through forgiveness when she wasn’t ready to forgive?
No matter how much evidence she saw that her husband was doing everything he said he would, she couldn’t stop the questions swirling in her head. She doubted everything—his words, his behavior, his promises. After years of betrayal and deceit, it all felt like another lie waiting to unravel.
Worse, she felt on edge all the time. Lately, she’d noticed how quickly her anger flared, even over small things. A conversation with her kids. A missed appointment. A harmless question from a friend. The explosion came out of nowhere—and it wasn’t always aimed at her husband.
But she knew where the pain came from.
Deep down, Audrey wanted him to suffer the way she had. She wanted him to feel what it was like to live with a broken heart. After all he’d done—the secrets, the p*rn, the years of pretending—didn’t he deserve that?
The idea of forgiveness? That felt like betrayal all over again.
“If I forgive him, won’t that mean he gets away with it?”
Maybe you’ve asked that same question.
I know I did.
When I discovered Dave’s long-time p*rn addiction, I was crushed. It was as if someone had pulled the rug out from under my entire life. Even as he began doing the hard work of healing, I still battled waves of doubt, pain, and especially anger.
I didn’t want to forgive him.
I wanted him to pay. I wanted him to carry the weight of what he had done—not walk free while I stayed stuck in the fallout.
But over time, I learned something that changed everything:
Forgiveness isn’t about letting him off the hook. It’s about setting yourself free.
And that’s why it matters more to you than it does to the one who hurt you.
But how do you get freedom through forgiveness?
Forgiveness Isn’t a Feeling—It’s a Faith Step
I often hear women say, “But I don’t feel like forgiving him. Doesn’t that make it fake?”
I get it. I didn’t feel like forgiving, either.
But forgiveness isn’t a feeling—it’s a decision. A daily, sometimes moment-by-moment, choice to release your right to revenge and trust God with the justice.
Did you know there is a key that unlocks the emotional chains that often weigh us down?
As Marcus Warner explains:
“When someone wrongs us, it connects them to us for the rest of our lives. That person could die, and we would still be bound to them by a chain of bitterness. God gives us the gift of forgiveness, so that we can be free. Choosing to forgive is really a gift we give ourselves.”
God gives us a way out. He gives us the gift of forgiveness—not so that we can be kind—but so we can be free.
As Warner further explains, forgiveness is how we cancel the emotional debt someone owes us. Just like Jesus describes in Matthew 18:21–35, it’s the act of releasing the debt and handing the responsibility of justice to God.
You are no longer the debt collector.
God is.
And that’s where freedom lives.
Audrey’s Turning Point
In one of our coaching sessions, Audrey said, “I feel like he’s doing everything right now—but I can’t let it go. What if forgiving him means he just gets away with it?”
I gently asked, “What if your unforgiveness means keeping you tied to the pain?”
Her eyes welled with tears.
For the first time, she realized her anger wasn’t just hurting her husband—it was holding her hostage.
That moment became a turning point. Not a fix-all, not the end of her pain, but the beginning of her freedom. Through coaching, journaling, prayer, and support, Audrey began taking small, brave steps toward forgiveness.
Not because her husband deserved it.
Because she did.
