Designing Your Better Life: What If His Change Isn’t The Key To Your Healing?

Designing Your Better Life (Even If He Doesn’t Change)

She sits across from me, weary and heartbroken.

“I just want him to stop looking at porn. If he would stop, we could be happy again.”

It’s the most common phrase I hear when a woman reaches out for help. She’s exhausted, frustrated, and often full of shame. Her marriage feels like it’s crumbling beneath her feet, and she’s desperate to fix it—desperate to fix him.

I get it. I’ve been there, too.

When betrayal enters your story, everything shifts. You feel like a stranger in your own life. The man you trusted has broken that trust, and now your mind spins with questions and fear. You try harder—maybe if you’re more attractive, more available, more understanding. Maybe if you pray more. Maybe if you just find the right words, he’ll see the damage and stop.

But here’s the truth no one wants to hear at first:

You can’t change him.

That’s not your job. That’s not your responsibility. And that’s not the path to your healing.

The Real Question Behind Designing Your Better Life

What if the better life you’re longing for doesn’t depend on whether or not he changes?

I know that’s hard to hear. When someone has hurt you, especially someone you’ve built your life with, it feels like your happiness depends on their behavior. But if your healing hinges on someone else’s choices, you will stay stuck.

You’ll ride the rollercoaster of his ups and downs, constantly checking, watching, and worrying.

That’s no way to live.

What She Really Wants: A Better Life, a Whole Heart

Every woman I talk to eventually says the same thing, though maybe in different words:

“I just want to feel whole again.”
“I want to trust again.”
“I want peace.”
“I want to feel safe and loved.”

Yes, you want a different marriage. You want him to change. That desire isn’t wrong. But it can’t be your foundation. Because what you truly desire—healing, wholeness, joy—doesn’t start with his transformation. It begins with yours.

Designing Your Better Life Starts With You

When a woman comes to me focused on fixing her husband, we work to guide the conversation to a deeper place gently.

What’s going on inside you?
What do you believe about yourself?

What patterns have you been stuck in?
What lies are keeping you in fear, shame, or resentment?

We peel back the layers—gently, compassionately, at your pace. And what we find is that the journey to a better life is an inside-out journey.

I’m not saying your husband doesn’t need to change. If he’s caught in pornography, he does need help to heal and break free. But what I am saying is this:

You don’t have to wait for him to start your healing.

You don’t have to stay stuck just because he is.

You can begin designing your better life right now. Not when he’s clean. Not when he’s honest. Not when he finally gets it.

Now.

My Personal Journey Toward Freedom

For months, I prayed that I could trust my husband.

But I still felt anxious every time he was out of my sight. One day, during my devotional time, I journaled this desire and my fears AGAIN to God. Basically, I whined and complained. Then, I heard God tell me to take my hands off my husband’s recovery. It was that clear—take your hands off.

God told me it was his job to change my husband and me. I couldn’t trust my husband until I trusted God with my husband. I couldn’t control my husband’s healing process. And if I persisted on that path, I would never grasp God’s faithfulness.

“Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.” —Psalm 62:8

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” —Psalm 56:3

“This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.” —Psalm 91:2 (NLT)

As you walk this path, something beautiful happens: your perspective shifts. Your confidence grows. You begin to rebuild the foundation of your life—not on him, not on what he does or doesn’t do, but on who God says you are.

You become the woman God designed you to be.

Whole. Wise. Grounded. Free.

And from that place, everything changes.

Your interactions with your husband shift. You respond instead of react. You recognize what’s yours to carry—and what isn’t. You gain the strength to make hard decisions when needed. And you begin to see glimpses of the better life you longed for—not because everything’s perfect, but because you’re walking in truth.

“The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.” —1 Thessalonians 5:24
